Life Safety Upgrade Brings Order To CourthouseInstead of facing demolition, the Seminole County Civil Courthouse in Florida underwent a comprehensive system overhaul, incorporating trouble-free notification products designed for installation ease. Fair WarningAsk a group of physical security managers what their most critical security priority is, and not many would answer fire detection and prevention. However, according to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 3,000 lives and more than $10.6 billion dollars in damages were attributed to fires in the United States last year alone. Safety In The HeartlandGrowing up is never easy, but when things get out of hand, there are places where the most vulnerable can find hope. One such place is White’s Residential and Family Services in Wabash, Ind. To protect this uniquely designed community and its special residents, White’s wanted to upgrade and improve its older conventional fire warning systems. The campus sought a more technologically advanced addressable system that was flexible enough for future expansion but also hassle-free. Attachable Lenses
Compatible with non-fire strobes System Sensor’s color lens attachments for strobe lights can be used for mass notification, severe weather alerts, emergency responses and other non-fire applications. The lens attachments are available in four colors—amber, blue, green and red—and can be used indoors or outdoors. Each lens ships with a clear adhesive on the bottom surface, making it easy to install on any non-fire printed strobe. Smoke Detector Tester
Highly efficient The design of SDi’s Smokesabre® smoke detector tester prevents it being used too close to the detector, eliminating harmful residue and focusing on targeting the test gas at the detector. With a flick of the wrist, the “saber” extends to provide fast and efficient testing while eliminating the possibility of detector damage through residue. UL listed, Smokesabre offers more tests per can, faster detector activation/clearing, and approval from major detector manufacturers. Fire Control Panel
The Metasys IFC2-3030 from Johnson Controls networks with other IFC systems and can integrate with a Metasys management system. The fire control panel is UL Ninth Edition listed and supports up to 3,180 intelligent, addressable devices. The IFC2-3030 supports one to 10 signaling line circuits with up to 159 detectors and modules per loop. It has eight channels of digital audio used for emergency paging and simultaneous broadcasting of multiple messages. |
Survey: Nearly 37 Percent Of RFID Users Expect Positive ROI Within A YearA general lack of clear ROI models and data on real-world results has slowed adoption of RFID technology, particularly in open-loop supply chain environments. ROI estimates are critical to RFID purchasing decisions, and in a survey of 185 organizations conducted in mid-2008 by ABI Research, lack of adequate ROI data was the third-highest ranked reason for non-deployment. Researchers Receive Grant To Improve RFID SecurityThe National Science Foundation has awarded a team of University of Virginia engineers $1 million to improve the privacy and security of RFID chips, computer chips the size of a grain of sand that wirelessly send and receive information over short distances (generally 10 feet or less) via very low-power radio waves. California Tribal Casino Uses RFID TechnologyGaming Partners International Corp. recently announced that it is the exclusive supplier of table game furniture for the newly opened Red Hawk Casino in Placerville, Calif. GPI supplied the Red Hawk Casino with all of its 75 gaming tables as well as table layouts, cards and high-frequency RFID gaming chips. RFID chip security technology enables the casino to verify the authenticity and value of each chip, track individual chips throughout the gaming floor and follow payments, fills and credits, table drops, tips and wins and losses per table at any time of the day.
